Relation of Skin Temperature between Affected and Unaffected Upper Extremity of Hemiplegics
|

Abstract

|
It has been generally assumed that the skin temperature of the limbs in hemiplegia following injury is notably cooler on the affected side of the body. Shoulder-Hand syndrome or reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a frequent and debilitating symptom,
and
those treatment remains a constant constant problem in hemiplegic subjects. Fifty-eight hemiplegic subjects were studied. Thirty-one of the 58 patients had left hemiplegia, while twenty-seven had righ-sided involvement. The skin temperature was
measured
at the hand dorsum, palm, wrist dorsum, wrist volar, cubital fossa. Within 6 months after brain injury, the skin temperature was reduced significant only at the cubital fossa. However, the skin temperature of the affected side was reduced at the
hand
dorsum wrist dorsum, wrist volar, and cubital fossa in patients over 6 months after brain injury. This study showed that, in patients who have suffered a brain injury, reduction of the skin temperature of the affected limb was dependent on time
after
injury. and skin temperature measurement of the affected upper extremity is suggested an useful marker of Shoulder-Hand syndrome and reflex sympathetic dystrophy in hemiplegic patients.
